Is it OK to be open about having depression and anxiety or should I keep it to myself?

I’m very open about my metal health issues. Should I stop doing that? Does that drive people away?

Hi,

I have often seen people benefit from being open about mental health issues. Quite frequently, they were pleasantly surprised when they were open about it, even at work.

However, there are people who may not understand or who are not well-meaning. You want to make it easier for you, not harder. So, I would use some discretion, but at the same time, keep in mind that we are all struggling with something we need to work on. So, being open about it with the right person can help both you and the other person, and you may also feel a greater sense of connectedness, which often has a positive effect.

All the very best,

Jonathan
