Fain (1971) provides a theoretical framework to investigate unrepresented traumatic aspects of hypochondriacal fear of breast cancer. Deficiencies in the primal psychosomatic tie arise from maternal roles failing to function as both mother of the infant and lover of the father. The authors highlight the importance of the maternal role in relation to the infant.
