DBT Therapy, BPD and EUPD: Emotion Regulation Without Stigma

Share

DBT stands for dialectical behaviour therapy. It is often discussed in relation to borderline personality disorder, emotionally unstable personality disorder, self-harm, intense emotions, relationship storms, impulsivity, shame, anger, emptiness, and fear of abandonment. This page explains the language carefully and without stigma.

Safety first. If you may harm yourself or someone else, cannot stay safe, feel at immediate risk, or have symptoms that could be medically urgent, contact local emergency services now. In Ireland, call 112 or 999, go to the nearest emergency department, or use HSE urgent mental health guidance. If self-harm, suicidal thoughts, violence risk, abuse, coercion, severe dissociation, intoxication, psychosis or inability to stay safe is present, immediate and specialist support matters more than reading about therapy methods.

BPD, EUPD and Language

Borderline personality disorder and emotionally unstable personality disorder are diagnostic labels that many people experience as painful, confusing or stigmatizing. They should never be used as insults. The more useful question is often: what patterns are causing suffering, risk or relationship harm, and what support would help the person build safety, steadiness, communication and choice?

What DBT Tries to Help With

  • Emotion regulation: noticing and working with intense feelings before they take over.
  • Distress tolerance: getting through crisis moments with less harm.
  • Interpersonal effectiveness: asking, saying no, repairing and setting boundaries.
  • Mindfulness: noticing thoughts, feelings, urges and body states with more choice.
  • Crisis planning: knowing what to do when risk rises.

Therapy Fit

Some people need a structured specialist DBT programme. Others may benefit from DBT-informed skills inside broader psychotherapy, trauma-informed therapy, group work, family support, psychiatric care, addiction support, or crisis planning. If medication is part of care, medication choices need to be discussed with a qualified prescriber.

FAQ

Is EUPD the same as BPD?

In many services, emotionally unstable personality disorder and borderline personality disorder are used for overlapping diagnostic concepts. Different systems and clinicians may use different language.

Is DBT only for BPD?

DBT was developed for severe emotion dysregulation and self-harm patterns, and DBT-informed skills are now used more widely. A specialist assessment is needed to decide what kind of therapy fits.
